Which Magic: The Gathering Product Should You Buy?

Every main Magic: The Gathering product compared: Beginner Box, Commander decks, Play and Collector Boosters, Bundles, Draft Night and Secret Lair.

We earn from qualifying purchases through links on this page. How we make money.

Buy a Foundations Beginner Box if you have never played, a preconstructed Commander deck if your friends play Commander, and Play Boosters if you want to open packs or draft. Collector Boosters are for foils and rare versions of cards, and a Bundle puts nine Play Boosters, lands and accessories from one set in one box.

Magic products compared by what you want to do

Magic products are sorted by the job they do, and Wizards of the Coast’s own product pages describe each one. This table puts them side by side, using the contents Wizards lists:

Magic products for someone who has never played

A brand-new player needs a product that teaches the rules, not one that assumes them. Wizards’ Foundations Beginner Box is built for that: it walks two players through a first game turn by turn, then lets them mix and match ten themed Jumpstart decks of 20 cards each. Two of the decks are kept in a set order for the tutorial.

Jumpstart Boosters work the same way without the tutorial. Each Foundations Jumpstart Booster has 20 cards, including the lands; you shuffle two packs together and play. Our guide to starting Magic compares the beginner products in detail.

Magic products for Commander players

Commander players buy two kinds of product. A preconstructed Commander deck is a full 100-card deck, ready to play. Booster packs then supply cards to change and improve the deck. The Commander precon hub lists the current decks, and Wizards’ Product Guide notes that Commander decks carry at least 10 new rare and mythic rare cards per deck.

Magic products for opening packs and drafting

Opening packs and drafting are what Play Boosters are for. Wizards calls them “the best for opening packs for fun and for drafting,” and every Reality Fracture Play Booster has at least one rare or mythic rare and a traditional foil. A box of 30 is what a draft group or a regular pack opener buys; what is in a booster box explains the box sizes.

A Draft Night box is the shortcut for a draft at home. The Reality Fracture Draft Night is designed for four players and includes 12 Play Boosters, one Collector Booster, 90 basic lands and tokens for a Pick-Two Draft. Our draft guide explains how that works.

Magic products for collectors

Collectors mostly buy Collector Boosters and Secret Lair. Collector Boosters hold the foil and special-treatment versions of a set’s cards; in Reality Fracture that includes shattered mirror cards and a 500-copy serialized card. Secret Lair drops are sold directly by Wizards for a limited time and often reprint cards with new art. Both are covered in Play Booster vs Collector Booster and what Secret Lair is.

Magic products from the next set, Star Trek

The next Magic set, Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek, releases on November 13, 2026, and Wizards’ product page lists the same product types as Reality Fracture: Play Boosters, a Draft Night box for a four-player Pick-Two Draft, a Bundle and Collector Boosters. It adds four Commander decks themed on Star Trek crews, fleets and armies, and Collector’s Edition Commander decks.

Its Collector Boosters can contain Headliner Signed cards, autographed by actors such as the ones who played James T. Kirk and Spock, which Wizards says are printed in English only. If you are buying for a Star Trek fan, the gift guide covers it too.

Buying sealed Magic products safely

Sealed Magic products sell at local game stores, large retailers and on eBay. On the resale market, check three things: the listing says sealed or factory sealed, the seller has strong feedback, and the title does not say “repack,” a word sellers use for packs they put together themselves rather than factory product. If you are buying for someone else, the Magic gift guide matches products to players.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Magic product for a beginner?

The Foundations Beginner Box is made to teach two new players: it walks you through a first game turn by turn and includes ten 20-card Jumpstart decks. A Foundations Commander deck is the better pick for someone who will play Commander with friends.

Should I buy Play Boosters or Collector Boosters?

Buy Play Boosters to play, draft or open packs for fun; buy Collector Boosters for foils and special versions of cards. In Reality Fracture a Play Booster has 14 cards and a Collector Booster has 15, most of them foil or alternate versions.

What happened to Set Boosters and Draft Boosters?

Wizards' Product Guide still describes Set Boosters and Draft Boosters, which you will find in older sets. The newest sets, such as Reality Fracture, are sold as Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.
