A Commander precon is a sealed, ready-to-play 100-card deck that Wizards of the Coast builds around one commander. Every precon includes a foil commander, tokens, a reference card and a deck box, so you can shuffle up and play. For a first deck, pick a one-color Foundations Commander deck; experienced players pick by color and play style.

How to choose a Commander precon

Choosing a Commander precon comes down to three questions, in this order:

  1. How much Magic have you played? A new player should start with a one-color deck and one simple plan. Wizards made the five Foundations Commander decks for exactly this: each “employs a simple, straightforward, and exciting strategy like artifacts, big creatures, or Dragons.”
  2. Which colors do you enjoy? The commander’s color identity decides every card you can add later, so pick colors you would like to keep building in.
  3. Which play style do you like? Some decks win with big creatures, others with a stream of tokens or with tricky spells. Wizards’ product pages describe each deck’s plan in a sentence or two.

Before you buy, read what a Commander deck is if the format is new to you.

What comes in a Commander precon

A Commander precon holds a complete deck plus the pieces you need for a game. Wizards lists the contents of each deck on its product pages. Here is what the two decks released with Reality Fracture contain:

Contents Foundations Commander deck Multiverse Reforged deck
Cards 100, ready to play 100, ready to play
Foil commander 1, with borderless art 2, each with borderless art
Non-foil cards 99 98, including 16 new to Magic
Tokens 10 double-sided 10 double-sided
Extras Reference card, deck box Reference card, deck box

Wizards’ Product Guide adds that a typical Commander deck carries at least 10 new rare and mythic rare cards and a Collector Booster sample pack with each deck. Contents change between releases, so check the product page for the exact deck you buy.

Current Commander precons from Wizards of the Coast

Wizards of the Coast releases Commander decks alongside most sets. These are the releases listed on its Commander and product pages from mid-2025 on:

Release Commander decks Release date
Final Fantasy 4 decks June 13, 2025
Edge of Eternities 2 decks August 1, 2025
Lorwyn Eclipsed 2 decks, one for Lorwyn and one for Shadowmoor January 23, 2026
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 deck, Turtle Power! March 6, 2026
Secrets of Strixhaven 5 decks, each two colors April 24, 2026
Foundations Commander 5 decks, each one color October 2, 2026
Reality Fracture: Multiverse Reforged 1 deck, four colors October 2, 2026
Star Trek 4 decks, plus Collector’s Edition decks November 13, 2026

The Foundations Commander decks are the easiest to learn with. Multiverse Reforged is a four-color deck led by Jace that Wizards aims at “players who are looking to step up their game.”

Commander precons for fans of other franchises

Commander precons for other franchises are a large part of Wizards’ recent releases. Wizards describes the four Final Fantasy decks as “featuring new-to-Magic cards and FINAL FANTASY artwork,” and the single Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles deck, Turtle Power!, as a way to play “all your favorite turtles in one Commander deck.” The four Star Trek decks, due November 13, 2026, are each themed on crews, fleets and armies from the show’s history, and Wizards also lists Collector’s Edition versions.

Magic’s own worlds get decks too. The two Lorwyn Eclipsed decks “embody the duality of light and shadow,” with commanders tied to Lorwyn or Shadowmoor, and Wizards invites buyers of the five two-color Secrets of Strixhaven decks to “choose your college of magical study.” If a franchise or world matters more to the player than the strategy, start there and check the deck’s colors second.

Buying a sealed Commander deck after release

A sealed Commander deck from an older release is mostly found on the resale market once stores sell out. Three checks keep you from buying a broken deck:

  • Sealed means complete. A factory-sealed deck has all 100 cards and its tokens. An opened deck may be missing its best cards.
  • Avoid “upgraded” listings when you want the original. Sellers sometimes swap cards in and out of a precon.
  • Read the deck name, not only the set. Sets often have several decks, and each one plays differently.

Where to go after your first precon

A first precon is a starting point, not a finished deck. Most players change a few cards at a time, adding cards they open in boosters. Wizards suggests exactly this for the Foundations decks: learn the game with the deck as it comes, then “retool and reconfigure it using other cards from your collection.”

When you sit down with strangers, use Commander Brackets to describe the deck. Wizards’ five brackets run from 1 Exhibition to 5 cEDH, and saying your bracket before the game helps match decks of similar strength. Our guide to how to build a Commander deck covers color identity, land counts and Commander Brackets, and Foundations Commander decks compares the five beginner decks side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What is a precon in Magic: The Gathering?

A precon is a preconstructed deck: a sealed deck that Wizards of the Coast builds and sells ready to play. In Commander, a precon is a full 100-card deck with its commander, tokens and a deck box.

Which Commander precon is best for a beginner?

The Foundations Commander decks were made to teach the format. Each one uses a single color and one easy plan, such as Angels, artifacts or Dragons, so a new player only has to learn one strategy.

Can two precons play against each other right out of the box?

Yes. A precon is a complete, legal Commander deck, so any precons can play each other straight away. Wizards describes its five Secrets of Strixhaven decks as each having a unique two-color play style, which makes a set's decks a natural group to play together.

Where can I buy Commander decks?

Commander decks are sold at local game stores and large retailers when a set releases, and sealed decks from earlier sets are listed on eBay. Check that a listing says sealed or factory sealed, so the deck has all 100 cards.
