The five Foundations Commander decks are one-color, ready-to-play 100-card decks that Wizards of the Coast released on October 2, 2026, to teach Commander. Pick by the plan you like: Angels in white, artifacts in blue, Zombies in black, Dragons in red or huge trampling creatures in green. Every box holds the same contents.

The five Foundations Commander decks compared

The five Foundations Commander decks each focus on one of Magic’s five colors. Wizards’ buyer’s guide gives each deck’s commander and plan; the color follows from the basic lands in each decklist.

Deck Color Commander Plan, in Wizards’ words
Calling All Angels White Giada, Font of Hope “Each Angel you play makes your next one even bigger”
Keen Engineering Blue Sai, Master Thopterist Build a fleet of Thopter tokens, then draw into a big artifact
Wretched Ranks Black Ghoulcaller Gisa Sacrifice creatures for Zombies, then bring them back
Reign of Dragons Red Lathliss, Dragon Queen Make Treasure, then cast the biggest Dragon you can
Tramplesaurus Rex Green Ghalta, Primal Hunger Trample over blockers with huge creatures

Wizards says each deck “employs a simple, straightforward, and exciting strategy.” That makes them a gentle first deck, and a good set to buy for a group: five friends can each take a color.

What is inside every Foundations Commander deck

Every Foundations Commander deck has the same contents, listed by Wizards of the Coast:

  • 1 ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck
  • 1 traditional foil face commander with borderless art
  • 99 non-foil cards
  • 10 non-foil double-sided tokens
  • 1 reference card
  • 1 deck box

The decklists show 32 to 34 basic lands in each deck, plus other lands, so the decks have enough mana for a multiplayer game. Wizards points out that the decks also carry “plenty of key cards that you’ll want in any Commander deck,” which makes them a base to build on later.

Which Foundations Commander deck to pick first

Picking the first Foundations Commander deck is about which kind of game sounds fun:

  • You like big, simple attacks: Tramplesaurus Rex. Green ramps into large creatures, and trample pushes damage through blockers.
  • You like flying threats: Calling All Angels or Reign of Dragons. Both win in the air, with white growing an army and red racing toward one huge Dragon.
  • You like building an engine: Keen Engineering. Blue makes Thopter tokens from artifacts and draws cards.
  • You like coming back from the graveyard: Wretched Ranks. Black turns sacrificed creatures into Zombies and returns them.

If two people are learning together, two decks with different plans make the clearest first games, because each player sees how the other color works.

Well-known cards in the Foundations Commander decklists

The Foundations Commander decklists, published by Wizards, mix new cards with well-known reprints. A few names from each list:

Deck Cards from Wizards’ decklist
Calling All Angels Lyra Dawnbringer, Linvala, the Preserver, Swords to Plowshares, Austere Command
Keen Engineering Master of Etherium, Steel Hellkite, Counterspell, Thopter Spy Network
Wretched Ranks Grave Titan, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Death Baron
Reign of Dragons Thunderbreak Regent, Utvara Hellkite, Lightning Bolt, Dragon Tempest
Tramplesaurus Rex Gigantosaurus, Elder Gargaroth, Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves

All five lists also include Sol Ring, an artifact that makes extra mana, and four of the five add Commander’s Sphere or Arcane Signet for the same job. The full lists, with every land and token, are on Wizards’ decklist page, and the cards can also be browsed in the Reality Fracture Card Image Gallery.

What a Foundations Commander deck teaches about Commander

A Foundations Commander deck teaches the core Commander rules in play. Every game starts with the commander in the command zone and each player at 40 life. You can cast the commander from there, paying two more mana each time you cast it again, and a player who takes 21 combat damage from one commander loses.

Because each deck uses one color, color identity is simple at first: every card in the deck shares the commander’s color. That changes when you start swapping in cards, which is where how to build a Commander deck helps.

How the decks fit with Reality Fracture cards

The Foundations Commander decks were released alongside the Reality Fracture set, and Wizards suggests adding cards from that set’s Play Boosters. Its example: Liliana the Repentant “fits perfectly into the Wretched Ranks deck, either as part of the deck or replacing Ghoulcaller Gisa as the commander.”

That is how most players grow a first precon: open boosters, keep the cards that fit the deck’s colors and plan, and swap them in a few at a time. The rules for what fits are in how to build a Commander deck, and the Reality Fracture products are compared in Reality Fracture products.

Protecting a Commander deck you play often

A Commander deck you play every week benefits from sleeves and a deck box that holds 100 sleeved cards. The box that comes with each deck holds the deck, but many players move to a sturdier box once the cards are sleeved.

Frequently asked questions

Are Foundations Commander decks good for beginners?

Yes. Wizards of the Coast designed them to introduce Commander to new players. Each deck uses one color and one simple plan, so a new player learns one strategy instead of juggling several.

Can Foundations Commander decks play against other Commander decks?

Yes. Each one is a complete, legal 100-card Commander deck. Wizards notes that longtime players can play with or against them too, though a heavily upgraded deck will usually be stronger.

Which Foundations Commander deck has Dragons?

Reign of Dragons is the red deck, led by Lathliss, Dragon Queen. Wizards describes it as racing ahead with Treasure tokens, then casting the biggest Dragon you can.
