The best gift for a Magic: The Gathering player depends on how they play: a Foundations Beginner Box for someone new, a sealed Commander deck or a 100-card deck box for a Commander player, a Bundle for someone who opens packs, and Collector Boosters for a collector. When in doubt, a playmat or deck box is useful to any player.

Magic gifts by kind of player

Magic gifts land best when they match how the person plays. Wizards of the Coast’s own buyer’s guide splits its products the same way, “for new players and gift-givers,” “for experienced Commander players” and “for the ultimate Magic collectors”:

Player Gift Why it suits them
Never played Foundations Beginner Box Teaches two people with a guided first game
Plays Commander A sealed Commander deck A complete second deck to play at the table
Opens packs, drafts A Bundle 9 Play Boosters, lands, a spindown die and a storage box
Collects Collector Boosters Foils and special versions of a set’s cards
Hosts game nights Draft Night A four-player draft in one box
Loves a franchise A crossover set Final Fantasy, Marvel, The Hobbit, Star Trek and more

Gifts for someone new to Magic

A Foundations Beginner Box is the clearest gift for a new player, especially for two people who want to learn together. It walks them through a first game turn by turn, then gives them ten 20-card decks to mix, plus playmats and spindown life counters. Wizards’ buyer’s guide also suggests Foundations Commander decks for new players and gift-givers.

Gifts for Commander players

Commander players always have a use for another deck or a better place to keep one. A sealed Commander precon gives them a new deck to play or take apart for cards; the five Foundations Commander decks are one color each, and the four-color Multiverse Reforged deck is aimed at experienced players. A deck box that holds 100 sleeved cards is a gift they will use every game.

The current decks are compared in the Commander precon hub.

Gifts for collectors and set fans

Collectors want the rare versions of a set’s cards. Collector Boosters hold the foils and special treatments; in Reality Fracture, 12 of the 15 cards are foil by Wizards’ slot list. The new Secret Lair Bundle combines two Collector Boosters, six Play Boosters and two Secret Lair promo cards. Some sets also have a Gift Bundle; Wizards describes The Hobbit’s as including Play Boosters, a Collector Booster and “a one-of-a-kind spindown.”

Gifts for Standard players and draft groups

Standard players play one-on-one with cards from recent sets, and a 60-Card Theme Deck is the ready-made gift for them: Wizards made them Standard legal, with 15 to 20 rare cards each and an online guide to upgrading the deck. Play Boosters from the newest set suit the same player, since Standard decks are built from recent cards.

For the friend who hosts game nights, a Draft Night box turns one evening into a four-player draft. The Reality Fracture version includes 12 Play Boosters, one Collector Booster, 90 basic lands and tokens, and Wizards suggests keeping the Collector Booster or giving it to the winner. How to draft in Magic explains how the evening runs.

How to check a Magic gift before you buy

Three checks before buying a Magic gift

Check the format first: a Commander player needs 100-card products, a Standard player cards from recent sets. Then check the set name and product type, because each set sells Play Boosters, Collector Boosters and Bundles separately and the names look alike on a listing. Finally, buy factory-sealed product from a seller with strong feedback.

If you cannot find out which format someone plays, choose something every player uses whatever the format: sleeves, a deck box or a playmat. None of these goes out of date when a new set arrives. If they are learning with a partner or a child, a Beginner Box gives both of them a first game with a guided tutorial.

A sealed product also keeps its full contents for the person opening it, which matters most for Collector Boosters and Secret Lair, where the rare cards are the point of the gift.

Gifts for fans of other franchises

Magic regularly releases sets based on other franchises, which makes an easy gift for a fan who also plays. Wizards’ product list includes Final Fantasy, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel Super Heroes and The Hobbit. Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek follows on November 13, 2026, with four Commander decks themed on Star Trek crews, fleets and armies, plus boosters and a Bundle.

Accessories for any Magic player

Accessories are the safest gift when you do not know which cards someone owns. A playmat protects cards on the table and marks a player’s space, and a deck box keeps a deck together in a bag. For a Commander player, choose a playmat sized for one player and a box rated for 100 sleeved cards.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Magic gift for someone who already plays?

Ask which format they play. A Commander player will use a sealed Commander deck or a 100-card deck box; a player who drafts or opens packs will enjoy a Bundle; a collector will prefer Collector Boosters from the newest set.

What Magic gift is good for a Star Trek fan?

The Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek set releases on November 13, 2026, with Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, a Bundle, Draft Night and four Commander decks themed on Star Trek crews and fleets.

Are Magic cards a good gift for a beginner?

Loose booster packs are hard to use without a deck. A beginner gets more from a Foundations Beginner Box, which teaches a first game for two players and includes ready-made decks.
