Play Booster vs Collector Booster: Which Magic Pack to Buy

Play Boosters vs Collector Boosters compared with Wizards' Reality Fracture pack contents: card counts, foils, rares, box sizes and who each pack suits.

Buy Play Boosters to play: they are the packs used for drafts and Prereleases, and a Reality Fracture Play Booster has 14 cards with at least one rare or mythic rare and one foil. Buy Collector Boosters to collect: each Reality Fracture Collector Booster has 15 cards, 12 of them foil, with at least four rare or mythic rare cards.

Play Booster vs Collector Booster side by side

Play Boosters and Collector Boosters differ most in how many foils and rare cards they hold. These numbers come from Wizards of the Coast’s slot-by-slot list for Reality Fracture, released October 2, 2026:

Feature Play Booster Collector Booster
Cards per pack 14 15
Traditional foils 1 12 (4 commons, 2 uncommons, 3 uncommons in echoed pairs, a land, a rare and a Booster Fun card)
Rare or mythic rare At least 1 At least 4
Echoed pairs cards 3, mostly uncommon 3 foil uncommons
Packs per box 30 12
Exclusive cards None Serialized Bloodline Recollector, facet foil shattered mirror cards, Japan Showcase cards
Token or art card A token or punch-out counter card An art card or a foil token, on top of the 15

The foil count is our sum of the foil slots in Wizards’ list. Other sets use different slots, so check the “Collecting” article Wizards publishes for each set.

What Play Boosters are for

Play Boosters are the everyday Magic pack. Wizards’ Product Guide calls them “the best for opening packs for fun and for drafting.” Each Reality Fracture Play Booster has five or six commons, one uncommon, a common or uncommon, three echoed pairs cards, one rare or mythic rare slot, one traditional foil, a land and a token.

Every Prerelease and Booster Draft uses Play Boosters, because each pack holds a balanced spread of cards for building a 40-card deck. A Reality Fracture Prerelease Pack, for example, has six Play Boosters. Non-foil shattered mirror cards and non-foil Special Guests cards can also turn up in Play Boosters, so a lucky pack can still hold a showpiece.

What Collector Boosters are for

Collector Boosters are built around foils and special versions of cards. Wizards’ Product Guide describes them as a “shortcut to the coolest cards,” with showcase, borderless and extended-art versions and 8 to 10 foils per booster in a typical set; Reality Fracture’s slot list adds up to 12.

Some cards only come from Collector Boosters. In Reality Fracture these are the facet foil shattered mirror cards (about 6,000 copies of each rare and about 3,000 of each mythic rare), the Japan Showcase cards in traditional or fracture foil, and the serialized double rainbow foil Bloodline Recollector, limited to 500 numbered copies in less than 1% of packs.

Booster Fun treatments explained

Booster Fun is Wizards’ name for the special versions of cards that make Collector Boosters different. Its Product Guide sorts them into three kinds:

Kind of treatment What it changes Examples Wizards gives
Print treatments Make the artwork “pop and shimmer” Foil-etched cards, neon ink
Alternate artwork Give a card a new illustration New interpretations of existing cards
Special frames Change the card’s border and layout Showcase and Masterpiece frames

In Reality Fracture these take the form of borderless echoed pairs, braintwister series cards, sculptor’s stronghold frames, shattered mirror cards, portal view lands and Japan Showcase cards. Play Boosters can contain many of them too, mostly in non-foil; Collector Boosters hold them in foil and in greater numbers.

Echoed pairs in both Reality Fracture packs

Echoed pairs are the cards Reality Fracture is built around, and both pack types contain them. Each set of echoed pairs is two cards of the same rarity: one shows a character as you know them, the other their double from Jace’s Echoverse. The set has 66 uncommon, 14 rare and 6 mythic rare echoed pairs cards.

A Play Booster holds three echoed pairs cards, always including two from the same pair. A Collector Booster holds three traditional foil uncommon echoed pairs cards, again including a matched pair, and its Booster Fun slots can add borderless rare or mythic rare pairs.

Special Guests follow the same split between the two packs. Reality Fracture’s 10 Special Guests cards, painted by Marina Banker as one panorama, appear as non-foil cards in 1 of 55 Play Boosters and as traditional foils in Collector Boosters. A player can finish the panorama from Play Boosters; a collector chasing the foil version needs Collector Boosters.

Which Magic booster suits which buyer

Choosing between the two packs depends on what you will do with the cards:

  • You draft, play Prereleases or play Limited at home: Play Boosters, always.
  • You want as many different cards as possible for building decks: Play Boosters. A box of 30 packs gives 420 cards against 180 in a Collector box (30 × 14 and 12 × 15).
  • You play Commander and want flashy versions of your best cards: Collector Boosters, or buy the single foil versions you want.
  • You are giving one pack as a treat: a Collector Booster feels special to open; a Bundle gives more packs in a gift box.

For box sizes across product types, see what is in a booster box. The Bundle option is covered in what comes in a Magic Bundle.

All the main products, from the Beginner Box to Secret Lair, are compared in which Magic product to buy. The newest set’s full lineup is in Reality Fracture products.

Frequently asked questions

Are Collector Boosters worth it for playing?

For play, Play Boosters give you more different cards per box: 30 packs of 14 cards against 12 packs of 15. Collector Boosters are built for foils and special versions, so they suit collectors and players who want flashy versions of cards they already use.

Can you draft with Collector Boosters?

Drafts and Prerelease events use Play Boosters. Collector Boosters are packed with foils and rares rather than a balanced mix of commons and uncommons, so they do not make a fair draft. Wizards' Draft Night box includes one Collector Booster as a prize.

Do Collector Boosters always have a serialized card?

No. In Reality Fracture the serialized Bloodline Recollector appears in less than 1% of Collector Boosters, and only 500 numbered copies exist.
