What Is an MTG Prerelease? What to Expect and What to Bring

What a Magic: The Gathering Prerelease is: the event before a set's release, the Prerelease Pack, building the 40-card sealed deck and what to bring.

An MTG Prerelease is a casual event at local game stores, held about a week before a new Magic set’s release, where you play with the set’s cards early. You get a Prerelease Pack of six Play Boosters, build a 40-card deck from what you open plus basic lands, and play several rounds. No collection is needed.

What happens at a Magic Prerelease

A Magic Prerelease follows a simple plan: register at a participating store, receive a Prerelease Pack, open it, build a deck and play rounds against other players. Wizards of the Coast describes the events as “casual, laid-back gatherings for Magic players of all skill levels.”

The format is Sealed Deck. Instead of bringing a deck, you build one from six unopened Play Boosters on the spot, and you may add as many basic lands as you like. Games are one-on-one, best of one or best of three. Wizards says most Prereleases run four to five hours, including deck building and breaks.

What is in a Prerelease Pack

A Prerelease Pack holds everything you need to build and play. The Reality Fracture Prerelease Pack, in a Jace-themed box, contained:

Item Count
Reality Fracture Play Boosters 6
Traditional foil promo card 1
Deck box 1
Spindown die 1

The store supplies basic lands. Reality Fracture’s Prerelease events ran from September 25 to October 1, 2026, before the set’s release on October 2.

How to build a Prerelease deck

Building a Prerelease deck follows Wizards’ own Prerelease guide:

  1. Open your six packs and sort the cards by color, with piles for multicolor cards, colorless artifacts and lands.
  2. Pick your two best colors. A third color stretches your mana and can lock you out of a game.
  3. Start with threats: the creatures and spells that can win the game alone, often your rares and mythic rares.
  4. Add removal to deal with your opponent’s threats.
  5. Fill out the mana curve with cheap spells for early turns and a few expensive ones for later.
  6. Add about 17 lands to reach 40 cards. Wizards calls this a basic template to adjust for your deck.

If you get stuck, ask. Wizards notes that Prereleases are full of new and returning players, and store staff or other players will help.

What to bring to a Prerelease

Bring very little to a Prerelease: your Prerelease Pack comes from the store, and so do the basic lands. Useful extras are card sleeves for your new deck and a pen and paper for life totals, although the pack’s spindown die does that job too. Wizards also points players to its Magic: The Gathering Companion app for events, so install it if your store uses it.

Why a Prerelease suits returning players

A Prerelease is also a good way back into Magic after a break. Wizards’ Reality Fracture guide calls it “a great place to jump back in,” because you see the newest cards and mechanics with everyone else, on equal terms, with no collection needed. Every player builds from six packs of the same new set, so a returning player is not up against years of other people’s collections.

Prerelease compared with a draft

A Prerelease and a draft both end with a 40-card deck, but you get your cards differently. At a Prerelease you open six packs and build from them, with no passing. In a draft you open three packs and pass them around the table, picking one card or two at a time. How to draft in Magic explains the passing, and Magic formats explained compares every format.

The full Reality Fracture lineup, from Play Boosters to the Secret Lair Bundle, is compared in Reality Fracture products. If you are new to Magic, read how to play Magic: The Gathering before your first event.
